DTP had great representation at the Patriots' Cup 8K Run/Walk on April 29 at George Mason University.
DTP is proud to have sponsored this event for several years. Proceeds benefit The Arc of NOVA, a non-profit organization that helps people with developmental disabilities and their families. | | 1 | Yes | | | Reston Interfaith and Fairfax County Hunter Mill Supervisor Catherine Hudgins recently led a “Winter Coat Closet” coat drive to help the children and adults in our community keep out the winter cold. | Reston Interfaith and Fairfax County Hunter Mill Supervisor Catherine Hudgins recently led a “Winter Coat Closet” coat drive to help the children and adults in our community keep out the winter cold.
In total, Dulles Transit Partners collected 36 coats and even more hats, gloves and scarves for their fellow neighbors in need. The coats came in all sizes, from children to adults, male and female, extra small to XXXL, and many were brand new. Several new hat/scarf/glove sets were donated as well. Everything was delivered early on the morning of Feb. 11 as the snow was beginning to fall and while the wind chill factor began to drop like a rock. The items were instantly put on to the coat racks and, before our volunteers left, they saw several children and adults leaving with the coats our employees donated. Thank you to all the DTP employees and citizens who gave to others this winter. Although the winter has been relatively mild, coats are still desperately needed!
| | 2 | Yes | | | The team reached a major milestone: the completion of the tunnel that will carry the future rail line under a portion of Tysons Corner, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. | The Bechtel-led team building the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project, under a contract from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, has successfully completed the tunnel that will carry the future rail line under a portion of Tysons Corner, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.
"The completion of the mining and concrete operations for the twin bores of the tunnel marks a significant accomplishment, given that the section was considered the most complex engineering and construction phase of the project due to the tunnel’s location," said George Morschauser, the project’s executive director.
Construction of the tunnel began in October 2009 and was completed two months ahead of schedule and under budget in November 2011. The tunnel was constructed using the technique called the New Austrian Tunneling Method. Crews would excavate a short section and then cover it with an initial lining of shotcrete. This process was repeated multiple times for both the inbound and outbound tunnels, which are each 1,700 feet (518 meters).
During construction of the tunnel, crews removed approximately 100,000 cubic yards (76,455 cubic meters) of earth for the openings; sprayed 25,000 cubic yards (19,114 cubic meters) of shotcrete for the initial liner; and applied 18,000 cubic yards (13,762 cubic meters) of concrete for the final liner. With the tunneling complete, crews will now install the rail track.
Bechtel-led Dulles Transit Partners is building Phase 1 of the Metrorail expansion project, which will include five new Metro stations and 11.6 miles (18.7 kilometers) of new track. It is scheduled for completion in 2013. A global leader in the rail industry, Bechtel has successfully completed some of the largest and most complex rail projects in the world including: the San Francisco BART system, Athens Metro, Jubilee Line Extension on the London Underground, and High Speed 1, UK.

The DTP Rail Riders team rode in honor of Dan Whiting, who was the project's field safety manager. Whiting lived with diabetes and passed away suddetnly in April at age 65. Twelve of the 25 team members completed the grueling 102-mile Centruy Ride -- the longest of seven ride segments that even included a stationary bike option. Each Rail Riders team member raised at least $200, regardless of which segment they selected.
Larry Melton, the design-build project manager for DTP, who completed a 33-mile segment, spoke for the team at the post-ride ceremony. "Diabetes has hit home for us, and we dedicate our efforts to the memory of our friend and coworker, Dan," he said.
The DTP Rail Riders ranked fifth in funds raised among local corporate participants. Carol Wu, subcontract technical representative, raised $2,147 -- the most of any DTP team participant.

After two years of construction, the tunnels that run under the International Drive/Route 123 intersection, and connect two of the four stations in Tysons Corner, are nearly complete.
Excavation began in October 2009, and major tunnel operations are expected to complete by the end of 2011. After that, the tunnel area will be turned over to Delta, DTP's rail subcontractor, who will set the tracks inside.
"I am extremely proud of the Tunnel Team's ability to execute this work safely, ahead of time, and under budget," said Project Executive Director George Morschauser. "Most importantly, future Metro riders can rest assured that these tunnels were constructed at the highest quality."
