Construction is underway on Phase 1 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. On March 10, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Chairman H. R. Crawford and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood signed the project's Full Funding Grant Agreement, which officially authorized the federal funding for the project to proceed. Two days later, we began construction.
The extension will be a new 23-mile Metrorail line that will extend service from the existing Orange Line at the East Falls Church station in Fairfax County, Virginia, to Route 772/Ryan Road in Loudoun County, Virginia. The corridor encompasses several activity centers, including Tysons Corner, Reston, Herndon and Washington Dulles International Airport, as well as the emerging activity center in eastern Loudoun County.
Phase 1, scheduled to complete in 2013, will build the first five stations of the alignment -- four in Tysons Corner and one at Wiehle Avenue in Reston. Relocation of utilities along Route 7 and Route 123 began in January 2008, and continues through 2009.
The Metrorail extension will connect Northern Virginia to the rest of the region, permanently linking our business and residential centers. As part of an integrated system of trains, buses, pedestrian walkways and parking facilities, the Dulles Metrorail extension is about more than just getting from point A to point B; it's about creating more efficient options on how we live, work and play without having to sit in traffic.
